OP Games has always supported game developers and given them the proper means to optimize their games for Web3. Whether it’s from the company donating to open source engines to further enable developers or to even holding accelerators for Web3 gaming projects with GM Frens, OP Games is helming the movement of getting more games into the space and into the hands of communities who love them.

That’s why during Dev Spotlight: NFT Rush Special, a segment was dedicated to how developers can reach out to OP Games and form a relationship to get their titles onto Arcadia, our online arcade built for Web3.

The Future of HTML5 Games

Problems within Web2 Flash Gaming

For years, browser-based or flash games have risen in popularity as more and more people have open access to the internet. Most of these games are monetized according to their site or platform’s specifications, majority of which are just ads. What’s more is that these Web2 platforms were sometimes shady or even stolen from game creators for their own profit as referenced in John Cooney’s the Flash Games Postmortem from GDC 2017 .

This is where Web3 comes in.

By leveraging the creator based and community supported economies in Web3, OP Games is making a portal where indie developers can put up their games and truly make a living at the same time. How so? With Web3, players can directly fund the games they love by either purchasing NFTs or even tokens tied to a project. It provides a sense of ownership for players and allows them to have higher stakes with the games they play.

Web2 VS Web3 Dev to Player Flow

The Community is the Core

What Web3 offers to game developers is the option to remove the middle man. And who is this middle man? Usually, those are big tech corporations or random hosting sites that will take 70%-80% of revenue from the creator. But for Web3, the creators are able to earn more and think more openly on how they want to develop their games. And this is all possible with a solid community backing up the developers!

As GM Frens’ head, Frances Han, said, “OP Games’ differentiator when it comes to game design is that the games are designed for the community. We want to allow players to feel that connection with the game. And then you can actually bring your own energy into the game. They can even play against other NFT communities or just their friends.”

Furthermore, the established connection between community and developers strengthens the feedback loop too! Players can be heard by their favorite game creators easily and creators can build upon community suggestions. It’s an opportunity to work together as both developers and the audience to make a sustainable, independent, and developer-first game.

The Opportunities in Arcadia

Arcadia presents a chance for game developers to readily put up their games in a Web3 setting. OP Games has already built a community of willing gamers who are excited for new releases and are itching to top the leaderboards. Additionally, future plans for Arcadia include crypto-buy in and reward schemes that can monetarily benefit both developers and players.

Arcadia Leaderboards

As OP Games is also partnered with open source game engines and other companies pushing for making games public goods, plenty of resources are also offered for the developer to easily transition in the Web3 space and create the games they want.

GM Frens, the game publishing arm of OP Games, provides a streamlined process for devs to work with us! Getting in touch is as simple as going to the site and filling out the necessary information. Another way is reaching out to Frances Han!
